Classical Music Rising is Gaining Momentum

Dear Classical Radio Colleagues:

I am happy to report that we have an impressive group of active station partners and that “Classical Music Rising is gaining momentum.” Click here to read last week’s SPARK! blog by Ken Mills. Partner stations are listed as part of the interview with SRG’s Tom Thomas and me. In addition we are delighted to be joined by WDPR’s “Discover Classical,” and look forward to hearing back from a few prime movers and shakers still finalizing their plans.

Leaders from the partner stations are meeting on August 3 and 4 in Phoenix where we will begin to set up Working Groups in the project’s vital topic areas, including 21st-century audiences, digital exploration, and building audience awareness and engagement. Together we are tackling some of the big issues and challenges facing radio as a format and classical music as a genre. It is our intention for our joint efforts to benefit classical public radio stations around the country, and our involvement with our cultural communities.

If you would like information about joining Classical Music Rising as a station partner, please contact Tom Thomas, Brenda Barnes or me.

Nielsen’s Total Audience Report

RAIN – Radio and Internet News (6/27/16)

Just released! Here is the latest data from Nielsen on radio’s U.S. listenership. This new report shows how radio is balanced against TV and the Internet in people’s days, weeks, and months.

One highlight: “AM/FM clearly has the widest reach — a notable and much-hammered metric in the radio industry. AM/FM’s monthly U.S. audience is 240-million. Compare that to Spotify’s global 100-million, and Pandora’s mostly-U.S. 80-million, and you see why broadcasters sometimes feel they don’t get enough respect (call-back to Rodney Dangerfield). On the other hand, U.S. radio is a $17-billion business, larger than the combined valuations of Spotify and Pandora.”

A Civil Conversation about classical radio: My relaxing 2 cents

Iowa Public Radio’s Barney Sherman (5/20/16)

Relaxing music? Background music? Yes, and so much more… I thoroughly enjoyed Barney’s thoughtful, stimulating essay on programming classical public radio (with additional shout outs to WUOL’s Daniel Gilliam and WDAV’s Frank Dominguez). Read Barney’s thoughts.
