Dear Friends of Classical Music Rising:

It was great seeing so many people from classical stations at the Public Radio Program Directors conference in Phoenix! There were many millennial faces among the conference attendees, and I particularly enjoyed the presentations detailing listening trends to public radio and other audio. The Radio Research Consortium’s Dave Sullivan noted in his overview that the number of weekly listeners to Classical public radio is up 9% from Spring 2012 to Spring 2015. When combined with mixed format stations (Classical/Jazz and Classical/News & Info) there are 11 million weekly listeners to classical music on public radio.

Election Day Countdown: Musicians in the White House

How does a music station cover a Presidential election? During the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, WRTI presented Music of the Presidents. Working from an online timeline, Kile Smith and Maureen Malloy compiled a doc of classical and jazz music that has been performed at the White House – and the great artists who played and sang for the Presidents. Music director Jack Moore used it for generating programming ideas, and on-air hosts to frame their comments. Click here for the Google doc and create your own playlists as Election Day draws near.
